Discussion: Cigar Accessories

When the weather is half decent, a few co-workers and I will gather in the fleeting sun for a cigar. It’s funny how we move with the sun until the shade completely covers our space and forces us to go back inside.

Anywho, the last time we gathered ‘round the smoke pit I was asked about my favorite cigar accessories. Which brings me to this week’s discussion question:

What’s the most useful accessory that you own?

I say useful, because my favorite accessory (without a doubt) is the S.T. Dupont Defi Extreme. It has been the first and only accessory that I’ve bought without even a hint of buyer’s remorse afterward.  My favorite thing about it?  It works exactly like you’d expect without sacrificing the impression and feel of luxury.

But it’s far from being the most useful.  In fact, I’ve had it in my kit every day of this deployment but haven’t been able to use it once.  Since it uses a proprietary butane from S.T. Dupont, it’s just a paper weight that I forgot to remove before flying over.

The most useful accessory that I own, however, is one that I was initially disappointed with after unboxing it.  The Xikar XO cutter felt too industrial for me, and the rough action of the gears was the one thing I didn’t expect from a higher end cigar cutter.

And yet, it’s been the one cigar cutter to travel with me everywhere.  I’m hardly ever without it, and it holds one hell of an edge.  I think it’s been about two years now and it’s still sharper than most of the new cutters that I’ve picked up in the meantime.

In this time, I’ve dropped it off shipping containers, let someone borrow it that left it in the rain overnight, threw it to buddies that can’t catch, and probably cut about 750+ cigars with it.  As it turns out, industrial is exactly what I needed and I couldn’t be happier with it.

I’d say my most useful, outside of my cutter and lighter, would have to go to either the Small Batch Cigar folding stand I got with an order (it fits in my pocket and comes in handy so much when I’m doing this around the house and smoking) or my Perfect Draw Tool. I’ve only used it a couple times in th exes months I’ve had it, but man it’s nice to use instead of tossing a good smoke.

I've been really happy with the reliability and excellent flame of my Dupont Maxijet. I thought it might be a waste of money, but I've used it many, many times and it works perfectly every time.

PerfecDraw and it’s not even close.

The most useful accessory that I own is my Xikar Xi3 Phantom Redwood cutter. She is there when I need her to gently, yet neatly clip the cap from my cigar awaiting total destruction by arson.

PerfecDraw is easily the best accessory I own.. its one of those things that you never think you'll need until you get one and realize its indispensable.

My most useful isn't even really something that would be considered a traditional accessory.  I picked up a hooded robe from Amazon to use as a smoking jacket and it makes a big difference in keeping the smoke smell out of my clothes so I don't get glared at in meetings afterwards.

It's the Cigar Minder on the golf course.  Two in the bag at all times--one for me, one to share.

For me, it’s my Peter James case...(there are others out there of course). It holds 4-5 sticks, I can toss in a Boveda pack to keep things fresh, it holds a cutter, lighter and my cigar stand, all in one beautiful leather package.  I actually custom cut some small pieces of Spanish Cedar to slide into the cigar carrier pocket to provide some level of crush protection.

Colibri V-Cut.  Love that Deep V.  S.T. DuPont Maxijet lighter as well.  Perfecdraw helps for the tight draws and works great as a Nubber.

Best accessory though is my Xikar 15-count travel humidor.  It was my only humidor for years and is still my daily travel companion.

Without a doubt the PerfecDraw tool is the most useful tool I have. It surprised me just how often it is needed and it really makes a positive difference.

..223 bullet punch key ring from Ammodors goes with me everywhere I go. Functional and a great conversation starter.

I'm a simple guy, and my most useful accessory would actually be a $3 torch lighter I got from Menards. Single flame toasts my cigar without roasting it and is very easy to touch up any burn issues.

I bought a hand stitched leather cigar pouch from Crowned Heads about 3 years ago. Looks awesome and has held up through countless day trips and expeditions.

Hands down it's my Xikar Flash SBC logo'd lighter. It was a gift and when I thought I lost it I was absolutely devastated. When I found it this year I was so happy (and considering it still had gas and works excellent) I immediately broke my cigar hiatus to use it!

My retired neighbor is the best accessory i could hope for. A life long smoker of Muriel Magnums! I love the look on his face when I introduce him to something more flavorful and enjoyable. Relaxation is only a small part of a cigar experience. Laughing while solving the worlds problems to the aroma of a good cigar is priceless!

My go to cigar accessory is my Xikar XI.
2/23/2019 7:23 AM
Mine is my xikar scissors because they have multiple tools on it!

I recommend two accessories that I use at home and traveling.  My Palio cutter and a little metal folding stand both pack well in a suitcase.

I'm a simple guy, the cheap 4 flame butane lighter that always seems to work no matter how badly you treat it has always been my go to. I can always find a way to cut or punch a cigar, but you can't go wrong with a trusty lighter.

Congrats Matthew!   And thanks to everyone for joining the discussion this week.   Cheers to an awesome Sunday.

My favorite cigar accessory is my Colibri V Cutter.

I use Xikar purofine in my extreme and it works like a champ.

Oddly enough ... the Cigar Prop, aluminum single cigar stand. It slows me down, drawing out my time with each stick. Deliberately setting the stick off to my right, in the stand, is somehow different from leaving it in the ashtray. Can't say why. It just works.

On top of that I've had more comments from friends at our local Club. They want one too. It's sharp, well-made and incredibly convenient in my pocket, briefcase, or cigar locker. Go figure ...

Perfecdraw is pretty handy.  A good kept on your keychain can really come through for you.

Gotta say, I had been itching to smoke Foundations The Tabernacle... broke down and had it last weekend, best part - my wife burned down a cigar with me! But next on the try list is the Winston Churchill The Late Hour and Sin Compromiso!
