Discussion: What was the last cigar you smoked and why?

Happy Wednesday, folks!

Recently, I’ve been finding myself spending more and more time with a cigar that I wasn’t quite sure about when it dropped last year.  Partly due to the size, partly due to so many new things coming out around the same timeline.

What I really wanted to ask was, what was the last cigar you smoked twice in a row rather than grab something new, but it didn’t quite fit the headline.  So, let’s ask something a little different:

What was the last cigar you smoked, and how did you pick it?

Myself, I’ve been blazing the SBC exclusive Long Live the King Sleeping Beauty by Caldwell like there’s an expiration date.  It’s the cigar that I’ve smoked last, and almost the only cigar I’ve smoked in the last week.

Caldwell The King is Dead Sleeping Beauty Small Batch Cigar Exclusive

I’m still working through some allergy and humidifier issues lately, or I’d have this written up in a Cigar of the Week Post instead.  But – these cigars are absolutely amazing right now.

What begins with a bit of earth and cocoa powder, transitions into Whoppers, Chocolate Mocha, and all sorts of other chocolatey nuances as the cigar opens up to the full ring gauge.

It really is a fantastic expression of the Negrito wrapper, and something that I’m glad I waited to find. Not being a fan of perfectos in general, I happened to land on them right when they hit the sweet spot – or so I think.  I can’t imagine them being any better with age, so it's currently open season on these in my tactical humidor.

How about you? Which cigar did you burn last, and why did you select it?

I recently smoked a couple Sacra Folium Radixs. They had been sitting in my humidor and i figured it was time to give them a try.  Pretty great full bodied smoke.

Smoked an LFD double ligero chisel yesterday because it was the last one in the box at my local shop and I hadn’t smoked one in a while.  Flavor-wise, I’m glad I grabbed it, however, it wouldn’t stay lit.

The last one I smoked was an Andalusian Bull on Sunday. Found some a couple weeks ago at a shop and was in the pool with the wife Sunday and figured I might as well smoke something that would last awhile and was new to me.

Smoked a Illusione Original Documents corona gorda. Last night after dinner. Had to choose a bigger spicier blend after a meal.

The last cigar I smoked was the LFD Andalusian bull. I smoked it because my day sucked and I wanted something with a long smoking time at the lounge. I was not impressed what so ever with the first half of the cigar, it got a lot better the second half, but I think it was overrated. On a better note...looking forward to smoking something new, or an old favorite, later tonight.

Oliva V Melanio. A weekday staple for me and never disappoints!

The last cigar I smoked last was the 2018 Morphine Lancero. I picked that cigar because I’ve been smoking a lot of last years BLTC lately.

Nat Cicco Aniversario Liga# 4 robusto. I was at my local B & M trying to decide what to smoke and I discovered an almost untouched open box of these. I vaguely remember reading something about them in Cigar Aficionado about a yr ago but forgot to try one. I bought it and lit it up after a very long day at work. Very good smoke output, chocolate, coffee, cream, baking spices, toasted coconut. Very relaxing w good construction. Medium bodied. I bought several more on my way out and have smoked them all. A box purchase in neat future for sure.

The new Herrera Esteli Miami. Great smoke. Big fan of Willy Herrera Blends. Like the new Miami blend much better. Great with bourbon.

The last thing I smoked was a Warped La Colmena. I wanted to try something different and hadn't yet smoked one. I was not disappointed.

I have been enjoying the Aladino line up and decided to try the Connecticut version last night. I'm not the biggest fan of Connecticut wrappers but it impressed me the same way that the Southern Draw Rose of Sharon did, very creamy and complex with no grassy notes.

Plasencia Alma del Campo, Sendero (6x56).  Definite spice, but not over powering, and a creamy/nuttiness that kept any spice from being overpowering.  Very enjoyable.

A few days ago I smoked an Arturo Fuente Anejo Shark No. 77.  It had been sitting in my humidor for half a year & I never seemed to find a "good" reason to light it up. I fired up the grill  & smoked while I was outside. It was a stellar smoke & very pleasant.

Last thing I smoked was a Joya Silver. I've had the red and black, and when talking to the owner at my local shop, he said the silver was his favorite of the 3 so that's what I decided to smoke.

Montecristo Platinum.  Second one I've ever smoked.  I'm trying to branch out and try other brands and blends.  No exotic, bizarre reason, looked good so I smoked it.

Was a Warped Corto. Perfect as a fuller body, but short smoke at the end of the day. Been in the 80's all day and rain was moving thru to cool things off, so a heavier stick was just the right thing

I last enjoyed the JRE Aladino Corojo Reserva. It was recommended to me while vacationing in Austin, TX a couple of months ago by the gentlemen stocking the humidor at Habana House. I have had my eye on it ever since I returned because it was the only stick in my humidor without a cellophane wrapper at the time.

It was not wildly complex, but that was okay because it was very well balanced Honduran puro that exceeded my expectations in just about every category (except the burn): smooth, yet bold; peppery, yet sweet; subtly strong. I even got a bit of horseradish on the retrohale. It was simply outstanding.

Tatuaje TAA 51th. I always look forward to Tatuaje's TAA release, but this was a little different in that it used a San Andres wrapper, which I love.

This afternoon during a heatwave in NYC I smoked a Mi Querida Piqueno Piqueno while I walked my dogs through Greenwich Village. I knew it would be too hot for the dogs to be out for more than 30 or 40 minutes, and there was a storm forecasted in about an hour, so the size of the smoke had to be pretty short. Hence, the Piqueno.  I had to beat the heat, and beat the rain. We walked for a few minutes and eventually found a spot in the shade to sit for a while and I enjoyed the smoke while the kids just kind of flopped down on the sidewalk.

I love the Mi Querida line and I think the Piqueno is my favorite Vitola.  Huge, rich flavor, but a digestible load of strength.  The cigar had a lot of changes even in that Piqueno format.  At time nutty, slight pepper, and delicious like French toast in the middle.

So I smoked my cigar and watched the clouds roll in.  It got a little cooler outside, and we began heading back.  I smoked it down to the nub and we got inside just as the first raindrops were falling, before the thunderclap.  The perfect crime.
