I chose the PSyKo SEVEN Nicaragua Toro today because it’s been my go-to stick to kickstart my mornings lately. Not every day, but several times a week – and in my line of work, that means you have a winner on your hands!
Upon firing this beauty up, my first impressions are of wood, pepper, French bread, and a bit of hay. Pepper really shines here, giving it a bit of an attitude along with a long, spicy finish that I’ve come to love. Couple that with a creamy texture that coats the palate, and we’ve set the stage for an act you don’t want to miss.
About an inch in, hints of citrus join the fray and contrast our spicy combination beautifully. Like with any amazing blend, there’s a push and pull tug of war going on with my senses that I can’t get enough of.
The second third shifts, bringing notes of caramel, croissants, leather, and muted pepper. As much as I enjoyed the pepper early on, the way it has dialed back now allows for a complex expression that reminds me of something from a bakery.
Baking spices in the form of mild cinnamon slowly emerge past the midway point. This was my favorite sensation in the Robusto size, and definitely the highlight of today’s Toro as well. Combined with all the other tasting notes, it’s really beginning to feel as if I’m walking past a pastry shop.
Due to antsy kids, I’ll have to take my leave here. Curious to hear your thoughts though, if you’ve also enjoyed this blend!
Suggestions
If you haven’t tried the PSyKo SEVEN Nicaragua yet, I’d highly suggest that you give it a chance to earn a spot in your humidor.
The Robusto size offered more in the form of baking spices, while the Toro has extra oomph and showcases more pepper. The robusto felt a tad milder to me than the Toro overall, and earned an accolade in our Top 10 Blind Reviews of 2019. I hear the Gordo size is smoother than the other two vitolas (per Indiana Ortez) but haven’t smoked it yet myself.
For a non-alcoholic pairing suggestion, I’ve enjoyed these thoroughly with Ginger Ale and coffee. It’s hard to beat. For those seeking a higher octane pour, I’ve also had excellent evenings with the PSyKo SEVEN Nicaragua and Diplomatico, Flor de Caña 18, and Angel’s Envy Rye.
