Interview with Matt Booth of Room101

Interview with Matt Booth of Room101

What’s your story?  How’d Boofy come to be a cigar icon?

I'm not sure that I would use the word icon to describe myself - but I am agreeable that I have been involved in a larger collective effort to (knowingly or unknowingly) evolve and develop the "boutique" or "cult" component of our industry over the past decade.

What are two things that most people don’t know about you?

I have an aversion to certain fabrics that shall remain nameless for the sake of self-preservation and I enjoy the idea of expressing myself through interpretive dance - but have not trained to the point that I feel comfortable sharing with the world. Perhaps 2021 this will see the light of day.

In addition to cigars, which other items are part of the Room 101 brand?

The overarching concept for the Room101 brand was that it was to be a true lifestyle collective, containing craft products dressed with modern design direction and stylization. Jewelry/accessories, bespoke leather goods, and a craft gin currently round out our item offering under the Room101 brand name.

Following a short departure from the industry, Room101 is back - with a different feel.  What’s changed with the brand?

A good deal has changed with Room101 cigars. I believe most importantly that our current products are reflective of my ten plus years of investment into the cigar component of our business from a construction/factory level to the shelf.

This is the Room101 of 2019 and beyond. I am truly proud of the caliber of products we are currently offering - both from a product quality standpoint as well as the look and feel of our new direction in regard to our trade dress.

What’s an average day in the life of Matt Booth like?

Stretch

Coffee

Extensive hot lotion regimen

Cigar

FAMILY

Weave in the constant flow of work

Design

Breath

Self-manipulation

Etc

What’s your creative process when deciding on a new cigar blend and branding?

The creation of a new cigar is something truly exciting. When you get on to a direction(blend/mixture/etc) that captures you, it fuels you to delve deeper.

Every blending experience leads to new lessons learned and fuels a perpetually swelling love and appreciation for the craft of cigar making and the people that we work with.

How would you describe your portfolio to folks that haven’t experienced Room 101 or your collaborations before?

My hope is that they would find that there is something for everyone within our collection of cigars.  Variations in taste and power across the board as well as a well-rounded assortment of tobaccos/materials offer something in Room101 that is truly unique.

I think that a cigar smoker that gives our product a try will be satisfied with the experience.

If you were a cigar, what types of characteristics would that cigar have?

Robust, juicy, brilliant white spice punch in the nose with enough nicotine to give a horse a proper buzz.

What can Room 101 fans look forward to in the next 12 - 18 months?

An ever-blossoming product offering released on a cadence that will allow for them to be well received without overwhelming. Some of the best stuff I have ever put my name on is in this category. Stay tuned!
