If you’ve been following James Brown for the last few years, you’ve witnessed the rise of an industry legend. He’s an extremely talented and versatile blender, one of the few to actually achieve a lifestyle brand, and quite possibly the only dude on the planet that always rocks a winning cigar selfie. If that wasn’t enough, James is a straight shooter and one of the most approachable personalities in the industry if you can corner him at one of his events (which we highly suggest you do!)
Every time you think you have the measure of Fabrica Oveja Negra, James cranks the dial a little more to the right and ups the ante.

First, you’ve got Black Label Trading Co – the iconic, cult-classic cigar brand. Then you’ve got Black Works Studio, an incubator of sorts to claim James’ world-class blends that fall outside of the BLTC core branding. And to add icing on the cake, there’s also the private label and Boutiques Unified sticks made at Oveja Negra mentioned below.
Whatever you want, they make it. And that’s why we’re highlighting Fabrica Oveja Negra today, a small batch factory that produces some of the most dynamic cigars available in recent years.
Nomad Cigar Company
You may recognize Fred Rewey of Nomad from a blending seminar, Facebook funnies, or another event at one of your local cigar shops. He’s been around the block for a while now, and is known for creating unique, flavorful blends that don’t break the bank. He's old school cool with a modern approach. Both he and James talk about working with tobacco as an art form, and his announcement to create Martial Law and Fin de los Mundos at Fabrica Oveja Negra was received very well by the community.

Emilio Cigars
As part of Boutiques Unified, Fabrica Oveja Negra has produced several new releases for Emilio Cigars to include Cavatina, LJZ, and the new Grimalkin. Trying to connect with Emilio is hard due to the scarcity of information online, but enjoying their cigars is easy!
Leaf by James
Yeah, James Brown and Fabrica Oveja Negra have even collaborated with Island Jim.
The national release is set to be later this summer, stay tuned!
But wait... There's more!
Their reach is even greater than their current portfolio. Oveja Negra has played an integral role in tons of cigar stories in recent memory. Before Mo Maali was the face of Patina Cigars, he co-created two labels for the Sultans of Smoke brand with Drew Brandt. Both of which were blended with James Brown and produced at the Church of the Black Sheep.
Here’s a few more examples of their fingerprint on the industry:
- Governors Cigar & Pipe created the infamous First Lady and Governor duo with James
- Cigar Federation created many, many cigars at Oveja Negra under the Color Series
- Ezra Zion’s The Raven was born here
- Churchill’s Smoke Shop commissioned La Prov
- Veritas, previously produced at Las Lavas, got a reboot last year and announced that some of their cigars will be crafted at Oveja Negra
- The Underground’s Catacomb remains an annual sensation from Oveja Negra
- Remember the VEEP?
- They continue to produce limited runs of Morphine, Sindustry, Bishop’s Blend, Deliverance Nocturne, and Santa Muerte. ‘Nuff said
Suffice it to say, James Brown and Oveja Negra are changing the game. If you haven’t smoked any of their cigars yet, we’ve got two samplers to get you started: a BLTC Sampler and an Oveja Negra factory sampler that includes Nomad and Emilio.
Tell us! What’s your favorite cigar from the Black Sheep Factory?
