Davidoff Cigars’ rich history continues to inspire us, as does their amazing variety of cigars. Everything the brand does feels iconic, especially cigars like the 2000, Special R, Special T, Double R, and the Anniversario #3. All of these are essential additions to any serious smoker’s humidor. But what continues to make Davidoff such an all star cigar maker is the willingness to reinvent the wheel. These five cigars are some of Davidoff’s most popular products, but Davidoff is never content to settle on doing the same thing forever. Enter the Davidoff 702.
The 702 line isn’t exactly new – fans may remember the original 702 series that came out in 2009 as a limited release. Unsurprisingly, it was a hit with its Ecuadorian wrapper and Dominican tobacco; garnering a 92 score from HalfWheel. This time around, the 702 line is reimagining those five popular cigars we mentioned above. By replaced the wrappers with the 702’s trademark Ecuadorian wrapper, these old favorites are given new life. How so? The best way to answer that is by looking at each cigar in the line.
2000
The original 2000 blends are maybe most known for their floral smell and earthy notes, but the 702 totally spins that on its head. With this version, you’re going to get a much deeper and bold flavor that gears more toward coffee, leather, and wood. Instead of a sweeter aftertaste in the original 2000, you’re treated with a lingering sense of creaminess.
Davidoff 702 - Special R
The 702 Special R is about as varied of an experience you can get from a cigar. Flavors range from almonds to cream with bits of saltiness. Halfwheel even remarked that it smells like a Chinese restaurant with bits of waffle cone and pinecone thrown in. Yet that’s all what makes this such a tasty smoke. It trades the sweetness of the original Special R cigars for a wider spectrum of flavor that will keep you on your toes.
Davidoff 702 - Special T
When you think about the original Special T, you likely are thinking something along the lines of “elegance”. It’s always been a classic feeling cigar, a reliable standby for serious smokers. The 702 blend puts a little zest to invigorate the old favorite.
Davidoff 702 - Double R
The signature of the Double R was its Connecticut Shade wrapper that gave it a silky, smooth finish. The 702 version, on the other hand, goes the opposite direction and gives it a bit more of an edge. The pepper tones and hints of leather give it a bite, pairing incredibly with the four-blend of Dominican tobaccos.
Davidoff 702 - Anniversario #3
You might be noticing a theme here – the Ecuadorian wrapper consistently makes for a spicier cigar. The 702 Anniversario #3 is no different in that regard, but it also does well to retain some of the richer, sweeter qualities that are associated with its name. As The Stogie Review points out, you’ll likely notice notes of cocoa and molasses but get more and more of the spice as you go. It’s a tasty buildup that’ll keep you intrigued all the way through.
