This week’s pick is something that I’ve enjoyed for quite some time, but one that a lot of folks haven’t been introduced to yet.
Cavatina is produced at Fabrica Oveja Negra and was blended by James Brown of Black Label Trading Company. Cavatina was the first of the Emilio brand to undergo transformation in the House of the Black Sheep and was so successful that their other lines recently got rebranded with a makeover by Brown.
What’s interesting about this cigar is the interplay between the forward tasting notes and the finish, or aftertaste. For something named after a short song, Cavatina seems to be anything but.
The initial moments of Cavatina are of earth, chocolate graham crackers, peppercorn, and a decent amount of vegetal sensations. It’s practically botanical except without the flowers themselves, and pairs well with the otherwise earth, chocolatey, gritty, and spicy flavors going on.

Into the second third, the main notes today are of muted honeysuckle, Whoppers, and effervescent Coca-Cola. Peppercorn has all but went away by this point, and the Whoppers and Coke are so strong right now that I could almost forget I’m smoking a cigar at this point. The finish reminds me of espresso, flower gardens, and a bit of dry cocoa powder.
And that is exactly why I love this cigar! Vibrant flavors that contrast the first and last impressions of every puff. It’s a work of art that’s an absolute pleasure to set on fire. I think I’ll take my leave here and enjoy the rest of Cavatina.
Cheers to a wonderful week ahead, Small Batchers!
Suggestions
If you haven’t given this cigar a try yet, I’d highly suggest picking it up in the Chocolate Town sampler to try it alongside other heavy hitters that cater to the chocolate lover. Comparing this cigar to others and seeing the different variations of chocolate sensations is a treat in and of itself.
My personal favorite Cavatina is Toro or Gran Toro. The larger ring gauges keep the smoke cool and flavorful, while the extra length provides more of a good thing. For a pairing suggestion, I’ve had great success with dark roast coffee, an old fashioned, or several different porters.
