Celebrating Labor Day with Smoke!

Celebrating Labor Day with Smoke!

I’m sure we’ve all heard the stories about what our forefathers endured many many years ago, leading up to the declaration of Labor Day and the subsequent working class victories.  This weekend, we’re celebrating those hardworking men and women by honoring the American work force with cigar choices that excite the palate and soothe the soul.

A few interesting Labor Day facts from Forbes

  • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living.  Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines.
  • The first Labor Day in Canada was almost ten years prior to the U.S.
  • The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act.  This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies.

United Maduro Churchill

Labor Day Cigars: United Maduro Churchill

You may be familiar with United Cigars because of Atabey or Byron, but they’re also proponents of boutique cigars that don’t break the bank. United Maduro honors the past and present American workforce by offering us something that we can enjoy in good health or in celebration, both often and as a reserved treat.  Come for the entry price and patriotic band, stay for the culture.

Cornelius & Anthony Daddy Mac Corona Gorda

Labor Day Cigars: Cornelius & Anthony Daddy Mac

Cornelius & Anthony pays homage to Cornelius Bailey, the first member of Steven Bailey’s family to begin working tobacco over 150 years ago.  The Bailey family began working tobacco pre-Labor Day when outrageously long work weeks were the norm, and continue to make fine cigars today in the U.S. and abroad.  The Daddy Mac, named after Steven’s father, tastes like white collar luxury at a blue-collar price and is whispered to be the daily choice of Steven himself.

Dunbarton Umbagog Short & Fat

Labor Day Cigars: Dunbarton Umbagog

A labor of love and a boon to those that seek flavor over aesthetics, Steve Saka’s Umbagog series makes it seem like every weekend is Labor Day weekend! Grab your pole, fill your cooler, head down to your favorite fishin’ spot and see if fish don’t bite more when there’s an Umbagog smoldering nearby.  When your workingman’s ‘gar has to taste like a million bucks, you reach for Umbagog every time.

Warped Don Reynaldo

Labor Day Cigars: Warped Don Reynaldo

It just doesn’t get more American than this!  Don Reynaldo was blended by an American, inspired by an American father, and crafted in the good ole U. S. of A!  This cigar pairs especially well with your morning coffee or espresso while you decide how to celebrate the rest of your long weekend.  Big on flavor and easy on the eyes, this is also the perfect choice to reflect back on your fun-filled days.

Crux Guild Robusto

Labor Day Cigars: Crux Guild Robusto

After Labor Day was accepted as a Federal holiday in the late 1800s, it still took many years for the eight-hour workday to become commonplace in the United States.  With the Guild by Crux, we remember those brave men and women that put their jobs on the line to fight for a better tomorrow. As it happens, this cigar pairs wonderfully with Bourbon (another American labor of love) and is always a great way to close out any weekend.
