Blind La Aurora Hors d'Age Review

HORS D’AGE REVIEW – CALIFORNIA

Summary:  Grape on the cold draw.  First few puffs feature red pepper, brown sugar, cedar, mint, and a smattering of sage.  Within an inch, this stick has taken the sage train down to pine needle junction.  The herbal notes are sharp and there isn't much sweetness.  This is pretty much the cigar equivalent of an IPA.  Another thing to note, this stick is burning extraordinarily slowly.

Butter and lemon zest start out the second third.  I still feel like I'm smoking something between a pine tree and a palm tree.  Red pepper and chocolate on the retro hale.  About halfway through, this stick does a 180: cherry, redwood, popcorn, and musk.

Still getting popcorn in the final third.  Other than a few minor touchups, the construction has been solid.  Cedar.  The draw is getting a bit hot and the smoke output is waning.  Popcorn, cinnamon, and mint as I relight it.  The burn isn’t doing so well, but I’m at the point where there’s not much use in fixing it.  Cherry at the finish.  This would be an okay change of pace smoke for an IPA fan.

If You Like That, You Might Like This:  IPAs.

Pairing Suggestion:  Horchata.

HORS D’AGE REVIEW – WISCONSIN

Summary:  Flavors on this cigar started with meat, oak, leather, chocolate, and cream, with sweetness on the finish. The first inch or so was a lot like smoking a candy bar. Then things took a turn. Pepper picked up (it was almost entirely absent at the beginning), and it brought a grapefruit-like tartness that just didn't work. And then it added coffee. If it sounds like those flavors don't go together, it's because they don't.

The draw was on point, but the burn needed several corrections. It did pour smoke like it was going out of style; you might be able to send smoke signals with this cigar.

If You Like That, You Might Like This:  Having a big ol’ cup of orange juice & coffee for breakfast.

Pairing Suggestion:  Bourbon.

HORS D’AGE REVIEW – OREGON

Summary:  Hints of molasses and dried out Red Man chewing tobacco come off the wrapper of this cigar.  The foot smells... well, better than feet, but just some dry grass smell.

With some heat applied, the initial flavors are glazed walnuts, oak, and a little black pepper.  The whole thing is mildly bitter... hmmm.  There’s also some not-quite-ripe dark fruit far in the finish... maybe like plums.

Midway, the burn is a bit crazy, but the smoke is still rollin'.  The nutty flavor is far more like cashew now.  Charred wood, some nutmeg, and dank dirt are also present.  The finish still leaves a little spiciness on the palate too... barely discernible... and it’s out.  Literally just stopped burning.  Weird.  It’s taking quite a bit of work to relight this cigar.  After victoriously finding smoke again, I’m greeted by muted flavors.

Finally, the end portion is offering some recognizably better notes with baking spices and some sweeter hints of honey coming through.  They weave amongst the charred wood flavors and the long finish of leather.

If You Like That, You Might Like This:  Long character development in books.

Pairing Suggestion:  Something memorably fantastic.

Participants in this blind review were completely unaware of the cigar they were evaluating until all submissions were received and processed. Each participant was asked to answer a summary paragraph, an if/than statement, a pairing suggestion, and a purchase suggestion.
