HVC San Isidro Review

Summary:  Sweet earth on the cold draw.  A few puffs in and I'm getting cedar, red pepper, and maple syrup.  The ash looks super delicate, so I wonder if this stick is under packed.  Despite my trash talk, the construction is holding up quite well.

The flavors have become somewhat muddled together in the second third.  Something like pizza dough is the only new addition to note.

Earth in the final third.  Maple syrup returns for a pleasant finish.

If You Like That, You Might Like This:  The coworker nod as you pass them in the office.

Pairing Suggestion:  Rum.

Blind Cigar Reviews at Small Batch Cigar

Summary:  This cigar brings notes of pepper, earth, leather, brown sugar, molasses, and a lot of bitterness. The bitterness in the profile was just too much.

The smoke is voluminous; it's on point for that. The draw was a bit on the looser side. It needed several touch-ups.

Overall, I was not a big fan of this cigar experience.

If You Like That, You Might Like This:  Brussels sprouts, steamed.

Pairing Suggestion:  Coffee.

Blind Cigar Reviews by Small Batch

Summary:  Milk chocolate.  Love it.  Box-pressed cigars.  Love ‘em.  This beauty is both.  I’d describe the nose from the wrapper as cocoa and bread.

Cold draw may be a touch tight but not bad. Tastes like a tootsie roll. Starting off with oak and pepper.  Then, more oak and pepper.  The pepper had some staying power too.  Now, some fantastically clear flavors of mixed nuts and cocoa.

Heading towards the middle of the cigar and I am experiencing a little bit of a burn issue. This is going to take a healthy correction. Ok, back on track. Leather, oak, bitter chocolate and mild tobacco notes after a lengthy touch up.  When you get an ash off the end, it’s solid. Producing great smoke as well.  The retro hale is quite citrusy and leaves a chalky feeling on the palate.

Well, more touch ups and I fear this cigar is suffering from all the heat I’ve had to hit it with.  I’m tasting lots of sharp notes of oak, some smooth leather notes and just plain tobacco.

If You Like That, You Might Like This:  Watching the home run derby won by a guy only hitting .125 in the regular season.

Pairing Suggestion:  Bloody Mary.

Purchase Recommendation to a Friend:  5-pack.

Participants in this blind review were completely unaware of the cigar they were evaluating until all submissions were received and processed. Each participant was asked to answer a summary paragraph, an if/than statement, a pairing suggestion, and a purchase suggestion. Cigars were provided by Small Batch with only the expectations of candid responses. All pictures, information, and formatting were completed by a Coordinator outside of the reviewing process.

I appreciate the honesty of the response .
I’m an HVC fan but even the best companies have “misses “ occasionally .

Blind reviews allow a different take on a cigar
and separates SB from other retailer / manufacturer owned sites that promote. every new cigar as “must have , greatest ever and fail to buy at your own risk “ .

Thanks for the independent review process .

Mark, thanks for the feedback!

I love being a part of this review process and I know the guys do too. It's always sad to see how some of my favorite brands hold up in a one off Blind Review, but that candid nature is what makes the reviews so great in the first place :)

Cheers to a great week!
